Manipulated photo (least unethical)

To me, this photo was the least unethical because like I mean so what if they pushed those mountains a bit closer? It didn't hurt anyone and it's not offending anything or anyone. It's not like someone is going to go to the mountains and be all disapointed because the mountains aren't that close to each other in person. These are the kinds of pictures where there isn't no harm behind it and it's okay and understandable to manipulate it. I mean the photographer did this to make the reader want to go there and see some time.

Ethics and Fashion Photography

1. The girl's neck was enlarged (made it longer and narrow), they also made her eyes bigger as well as make her lips more plump, they also made her hair darker than it was. The girls' eyes were moved down a bit, her cheeks/cheek bones were smaller and her face was narrower than it was.

2. I don't think it's ethically acceptable for people to change somebody elses appearance like they did because they're trying to make her look all pretty and good for the bulletin when in fact she looks like an average person. That kind of thing is what makes teenagers worry about themselves in a way that is negative because you have them starve themselves and get plastic surgery and all those things. It's like when people manipulate with model's bodies to make them look "picture perfect."

3. I think that it's okay to do this for like a yearbook because what if people have really bad acne? What if their face is really oily? Those are the kind of circumstances in which photoshoping is okay.

4. In this video, I think it was okay to change her hair color and maybe the tone of her skin. In other situations, something that would be okay to change would be something like fixing a tooth gap, any discoloring of the teeth, hair color, bad acne, hairs in the way, change a bit of tone in the person's skin, but not to a point where they go from white to black like nothing too crazy and big just a tiny bit, a mole, and tattos I mean minor details like that but really nothing drastics and huge like the person's body like neck position and eyes.

5. To me, the difference is that fashion photography is more like advertising stuff and making the models look pretty so they can convince people to buy the item. Photojournalism is more taking pictures and making sure that if you manipulate something it's for like again bad acne and so that people don't look as bad to as fashion photography, they pretty much manipulate your whole body.

6. In my opinion, all types of photography don't really have much of a relationship because they have a different perspective towards it but they all want their picture to come out good and that it is presentable. It effects the ethical practice to each by them having a different perspective toward their work and what they want to achieve and how good it's going to look. For example, for fashion photography people change the model's whole identity so it makes people buy the item.

Manipulated Photo (most unethical)

In my opinion, I really don't like these photos because these are the kinds of things that make soldiers bad and like they are being unhuman. It was the most unethical in my point of view because the soldiers aren't just there to kill, but to help those people and this is what jerks do. I know people would like to make money off of really good pictures, but they seriously messed this picture up into making it symbolize something way different and bad.

Captions (for print)

Jonathan Hinajosa is concentrating on his assignment by thinking deeply because he wants to get a good grade on it, but was being distrated by his friends during 4th period in Ms. Castling's class. He sat on the far left of the class, which was by the computers so he wasn't tempted to talk to anyone.

Print Evaluation

1. Yes, there is something in focus, not as sharp as I would like it to be but it is.
2. Jonathan (the main subject) is what's in focus. The background is really not in focus, the computers on the table and the chairs pushed in are totally off focus.
3. I think that the main cause why it wasn't in focus was because of the distance between me and the computers.
4. I don't really think that there was a good contrast in my picture and the cause may have been the lighting at the moment when I took the photograph or I just chose a light contrast.
5. My photo is candid because it is showing education, which you can tell by looking at the computers on the background. The photo really doesn't contain much action exept for the fact that Jonathan is thinking/wondering downward. Next time, I would probably take a photo of something with more action such as giggling or laughter. The photograph fills the frame because it's focused on Jonathan and there really isn't much of a white gap and like a lot of people and you don't know what is your subject clearly. In the photograph, it consists of a Rule Of Thirds because Jonathan's head would be in the top left corner if you were to put a grid of 3 by 3 on top of it.
6. Yes, there are 2 spots on my print. They may have been caused by not drying right or when I set it down, somebody elses water spilled on my print or maybe chemicals remained there.
7. Yes, my negatives, contact sheet, test strip, and print are in my folder.
8. There is no print rings in my print.

Ethnics and Photo Manipulations

Summary: When you think about April Fool's Day, you think of funny and pranks, but throughout the Middle East, a little fun can cost you your job and career no matter who you are. Many talented people such as Brian Walski, Adnan Hajj, Issam Kobeisi, and Allan Detrich ended up with no job and had their photos taken away from company's archives and just for manipulating photos. In Allan Detrich's case, investigators found that 79 photos of his were involved and had been manipulated, which were a lot of violations. Basically people have been fired for spicing up their photos from a boring and uninteresting photograph, to a more cool and spontanious one.

1. Well, I'm unsure towards which side I like, whether the "that's bad" kinda side or the "there's no harm towards it" side. First of all, I mean would you like a boring picture or a cool one? I mean it makes more action towards the picture if you put three bombs instead of just taking a picture of one simple bomb. On the other hand, there is a bad side to it because everything is just fake meaning that the photographer is going to get paid to just take a picture and manipulate it and turn it in like that. It's like taking a picture of a pig and then making it look like it's flying, I mean pigs don't fly and then the photographer wants us to believe that? OKAY!!

American Soldier Slideshow and Captions

1. The photo that I found most powerful throught the slideshow was when Ian was walking in the streets of Iraq, and in the background there was this painting that read "never forget 9-11." Out of all of the photos in the slideshow, there wasn't really any photos that made me say, "whoa...that's something" and this one particular photo is true because nobody wants to forget that one day when terrorists attacked us and thought they were going to get away with it. It represents why many soldiers sacrifice their lives whether they're young or old, day after day and the reason why they are true heroes like Ian who is just a teenager.

2. In my opinion, the last sequence of photographs (coming home) were the most powerful to me because I kinda reflected the situation onto my personal situation, like just thinking how my sister wanted to join the army,so it's like seeing the future, her enrolling and just getting to see her for a little bit and there she goes, leaving for duty.

3. The images work together to tell the story by showing the actions and emotions of how it was for Ian to enroll into the army and how he had some ups throughout his life in the army and how he had his downs like how he let go of his girlfriend and found a new one in the end and ended up getting married. He had ups too, like how he got over his drinking problem and he had a fun time in the army despite how sleepy and stressed out he may have been at times. There were times where Ian would be a teenager and other times where he would be a complete soldier, meaning that he would act mature and on his game. His emotions would express how he felt for example, when he was training, he felt tired and hot from the sun and worked out, it was saying how much he was going through and felt like just giving up. There were also the happy times when Ian was with his friends and family and was partying and his emotions showed it as well as how the photographer captured the action of him fooling around with his buddies.

4. In the photos in which Ian is the main subject, the verbs are usually written in the present tense form.

5. The captions enhance the photos in a way that it makes the reader understand the photo and know what's really going in on in people's mind. It takes the photo to another level in which you get to know what's going on behind the image.

6. Chapter 6:In the country- 7th picture
Ian prays to god while in his room, wishing to see another day and praying for his loved ones hoping they're okay.

7. The other features enhance the photographs by adding the full story towards the picture, like for instance, if you just see the picture of Ian with the sticky note that said "Army Recrurter", you don't really know more to it except for the fact that he might be thinking about it or something, and then in the video, his father says that, "He thought about it out of the blue and he might have been thinking about it for a while." That gives you more of a statement that yeah he's been thinking about it and he's made up his mind. These other features allow you to do that, meaning that it will give you more of the story and why he felt like that, just by looking at the pictures, you might have not known that Ian and his dad are like BFF.

8. As I have said before, the videos are better than photographs because they let you know more than just by looking at this simple image that might give you questions. My example: In chapter 10: Coming Home, in the beginning it shows how there's a bunch of people waiting for their loved ones and a bunch of banners and a lot of soldiers were expected and you could see the soldiers departing from the plane to the families. In the pictures, all you see is Ian smiling and like happy to come home (DUH!), but you would never have known how much his parents were proud of him and all the emotions running through everyone and each of those who are proud of the soldiers and for them to come home.

9. The photographs are better than the videos because of the emotions that are caught in the moment. You know how they saw that a photos speaks for itself and it's worth a million words? (or something like that), well that's how it is at times because yeah the videos might say what's going on and what leads to that photo. My example: Chapter 10: Coming Home, (I was comparing the video with the photos) when Ian is in the table with his family, you can see that he's exited and anxious to tell his stories and get caught up with the 411 (haha lol!).

Negatives Evaluation

From looking at my photos, I think that maybe 6 out of the 12 pictures came out good.

Well there were like 3 pictures that weren't really good in my perspective because of the composition due to someone's head kinda being cut out. Others were because of the light I had taken them in, meaning that it didn't have much light or too much light. Some of them were too blurry which I think was caused by not getting to close at times.

I think that the picture(s) that I choose later on will turn out well because it wasn't too blurry and a lot of chunks weren't cut out in the picture.

I think that in my picture, focus was a technical aspect involved. Some evidence is :it's in good position and it's not too blurry.

In my favorite negative, I used the rule of thirds and simplicity because Jonathan's head would be in the top left corner if you were to put a grid on top of it. It also has simplicity because it's taken in an angle without a crazy background and just trying to get the main subject, whick is Jonathan.

Marlboro Marine Audio Slideshow

1. Luis Sinco utilized skills such as the tone of the background music and how his texts were white with black background. Well throughout the slideshow, there was this background music sort of thing that went with the tone of the slideshow, which was sorrow/remorse. The texts here and there were also a skill that Sinco utilized because its not like it was yellow with an orange background which wouldn't fit with the slideshow because it would look like awkard in a way that wouldn't fit in.

In my opinion, the effect of the multimedia in the sllideshow was that in some parts of it, there would be like a mini clip of him just looking stressed with his head down or smoking his tragedy through a cigarette. It puts a meaning that is emphasizing how he doesn't want to remember what happened in Iraq and like then he got married to Jessica and he had a lot of mixed emotions about the attack and the newly wife and he just wants to EXPLODE!!! (Or in other words, he wants to escape from everything and DIE.) Another effect that the multimedia had on the slideshow was that the tone was set from the background music that was playing and at times it makes you put yourself in his shoes and just feel like crap.

2. I think that the most powerful image from the slideshow was in the beginning where you see soldiers just traumatized by what they had just done, which is to kill people for the benefit of their country, but really they have to kill after being taught that it was wrong no matter what. If you were to just see that image, you would be like "Wow! who knew soldiers just sat there and cried themselves out", but once you think about you would put yourselves in their shoes and be like "I can't believe what I just did that" and the images of the war would go round and round in your mind.

The most powerful sequence of photographs were the last ones where the dude was just saying how it's not right to shoot another human being regardless of what your causes are or what their causes are. I think that this sequence is powerful to me because it made me really think about how much war there is and Iraq but Milller said, "What have we gained as a country?" and it's true because everyone has their own opinion about why we are there and what we want to do about it, but is it worth it? Is it going to make us a better country?

In my opinion, the audio enhances the photographs in a way that it added that extra "spice" to it is what I would call it. The rhythm was blended in with the photos to make that sorrow kind of tone to it.

The images work together to tell the story in a way that like in one of the pictures, for instance, Miller is sad and depressed while at the same time he's saying how it's ruining his life and he just wants to get away from it, and at the same time he's saying that, the picture shows him sitting down in the carpet and there's a gun in the table, which represents that he could just pull the trigger at any time and just really escape from the war.

One of the challenges that I had was the fact that since it was friday (and I guess nobody really does anything on fridays), there wasn't really much action in the room exept for lights turned off and people bored. The way I overcame this challenge was by taking advantage of the rooms that did have the lights on and make people do stuff like read their paper or make them look like their writting, stuff like that.

I was probably focused more on composition and that the lighting was good because I didn't want to get a dark picture or too bright I guess... so yea. To do this, I kept checking on the little light meter thing and check that it was ok and it wasn't in the negatives or anything. I also took pictures of the composition viewpoint by getting up close to people and taking a picture of what I had them doing or what they were already doing.

I think I attempted to use patterns by taking a picture of someone with a striped shirt that looked pretty darn cool.

The thing I would do differently would be get more emotions into the picture and do more compositions (if possible) like depth or symmetry.

Processing Black and White Photos

Step 1: Make sure the lights are OFF! Now, remove film from the cassette and then pull flat end off and pull of tape.
Step 2: Load your film onto a -preferably- plastic film reel because if your like me, who are new to all of this "things" you won't really have a hard time with. Then, you move the film onto the slot and keep on moving it into the loader.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PRACTICED LOADING A FEW TIMES!!
Step 3: You can place the loader into the film tank and read the directions on how to cover it. Since the film is secure tightly in the tank you may turn on the lights and not be in the dark no more... yay!
Step 4: Make sure you have a temp. of about 68-70 degrees F.. Spread out the chemicals needed for processing the film.
IF YOU WANT TO GET A GOOD NEGATIVE, THEN DON'T EXCEED 75 DEGREES!!!!
Step 5: Pour developer into film tank and don't open the tank. Agitate for one minute to remove all of the air bubbles.
Step 6: Pour the running water to stop development, which is called "stop bath"
Step 7: Fix the image and use the fixer with hardener
Step 8: Remove tank cover and sit film in cold running water make sure you inspect the little film to make sure everything is going good.
Step 9: Pour your film into hypo eliminator and agitate it.
Step 10: Final wash (YAY!)
Step 11: pull film out of the tank CAREFULLY! Dont touch surface and dry film with clips dust free area.
Step 12: Give it 1-2 hours for the film to be dry, then cut six negatives long.

CONGRATS!!!! your done with this whole thing.......about time huh?

What the pros are doing- Repetition

(This unique geological phenomenon, known as a Danxia landform, can be seen in several places in China. This example is located in Zhangye, Gansu Province. The color is a result of millions of years of accumulated red sandstone and other sediments that have dried and oxidized.)
The things that are being repeated in this photo are the colors and the hills.
How does the photo lead the eye through the frame?...Well, the colors make the photo a must see kind of thing and the colors attract the eye. The hills are the main subject and you can't really pay attention to the minor stuff so it really gets your attention.

What the pros are doing- Repetition

(Onlookers in Manhattan stand inside of one of the two columns of light memorializing
the Twin Towers on the eighth anniversary of the day they fell.)

This picture has rays being repeated.
How does it lead the eye through the frame?...Well, the lines are diagnal so it makes it look more dynamic and it adds more of a momorial thing to it. You're attracted to look at the rays from up above.

What the pros are doing- Repetition

(Alec Baldwin celebrates backstage at the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards, where he
was honored as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for 30 Rock.)
This photo repeats the CBS icon/symbol with the award from the Emmy Awards.
How does it lead the eye through the frame?.....Well, you're concentrated more on the background than on Alec Baldwin. Your eye leads to the background.

Academics Preview- Filling the frame

"Filling the frame"
The frame is filled with emotions and a good story behind it. In terms of a really good picture, the photographer did a pretty good job of captivating the moment and everything. I really like this picture overall. In the picture, body parts are cut off but I mean maybe they couldn't take the picture a bit more back because you wouldn't really be able to get the stuff that the girl is holding.

Academics Preview- The story

"The Story"
This picture visually tells a story because the picture is full of different stuff, like the patrick poster, the writting on the chalkboard, the newspaper, the boy and his sketches, and the box behind the boy. I think that the story behind the picture is that the boy was just hanging out in the art room with no one around. He is very inspired by art and the way he likes to express himself is by turning the lights off. He sits down and is just not feeling it in the moment, so he picks up the newspaper that he found on top of the box that was behind him. He got bored and looked at the writting his teacher had for the lesson that day. Out of nowhere, he turned the lamp on and started just doodling, and as he was going it came out as something.

Academics Preview- Emotions

Emotions

Each and everyone of the students singing have different emotions showing on their faces and that's just really cool because it's like... you have to think and be like "I wonder what they're thinking about" or "wow!, they must be really happy/sad"

What the pros are doing-sports

Shot with: Canon EOS-1DS, EF 24mm f/1.4L USM, shot at 1/250 f/5.6

The effect of Shooting at this shutter speed: it came out good and it wasn't blurry or anything

The effect (Depth of field) of shooting at this aperture: it made it seem as if there were depth between the roof and the floor and like within the bleachers.

I think that the photographer was standing a bit behind the basket. I'm going to guess that it may be like a foot or two behind the out-of-bounce line.

Show and Tell - video

http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid1418565568?bctid=23358079001

I was interested in this video because it's proving that people care about the environment and are taking some actions into making a difference. It's pretty cool how they have a day where they're like "we only ask for one day, that you guys go out in your bikes and go to work without using gas and polluting the earth." It amazes me how people actually do really go out in their bikes, because whenever people say "Oh lets do this" or "Hey lets do that" most of the people won't do that so yeah. This video really captivated how powerful a day without using cars can make a difference.

Show and Tell - image

I found this photo really interesting because it looks just so amazing, I mean for one it's night and there is lights (of course), but the fact that there is also water to reflect the lights and everything, it makes thre image pretty darn cool. Second of all, there is a firework in the sky in the upper center of the picture. It looks like people would be fascinated by this view as I am with it.

Contest Preview

Adam Boley
The thing that makes this photograph powerful, is how its been taken in black and white and to me, it adds a more mysterious thing to it. Like there was something weird or creepy about that building. If it were to be taken in say "normally", which would be in its true colors, the building might perhaps look plain and dull. Now that I think of it, this photograph fits with the composition of viewpoint because of how the student took the picture from the bottom lookint up and the affect makes it look good and inspiring because you have to kind of take a second glance at it. By looking at the picture, it doesn't seem like the sun was really shining much, but I could be wrong and it may have been a factor in the picture as well.

I think I would like to show the world my great photographer through a poster. I think I could be creative and come up with a poster to show my photographer skills.

Great Black and White Photographers 3

I like this picture because the lines of the water really made an impact the first time I saw it. I kind of disagree on how Uelsmann positioned the boat because yeah it seems that the boat is traveling by and everything and it's not going to like fall off the picture, but to me, I think that it would be better if he used the Rule Of Thirds on the boat to make a bit more something to it, but no matter where the boat was I really like it. I can see the boat passing by in a slow motion and just so silent that it's like it's not there. I can see the waterfall and it looks gorgeous beneath the clouds. I can smell the tons of water and the fresh-warm and cozy air around me. I can smell the evening coming to an end soon. I can hear the sound of the water just falling and making a somewhat of a splash when it hits the water from beneath. I can also hear some birds here and there. I can taste some water in my mouth as if it was meant for me to drink. I can feel the moist and warm air as I touch my hair and it feels good. I feel like it's paradise and there's no tomorrow.

Great Black and White Photographers 3

I really like this picture because it seems like it would be an intersting place where you can just take a stroll through the trees in the pathway. The pathway seems to be going to forever and looks good in between the "forests."
I can see the dirt in the floor and it has a lot of shoe prints. I can see the narrow pathway leading to something that I'm hoping is interesting and amazing.
I can smell the damped trees. It just rained and I'm loving the smell in every step I take. I can smell the fresh wilderness and outdoor smell, which smells pretty good because it's fresh air.
I can hear the birds communicating back and forth with each other. I can also hear the wind blow in the trees and the swooshing of them. There's nobody there so noise isn't a bother or a distraction.
I can taste the dirt road and the air in my mouth. The strong smell is so powerful that I can taste it in my mouth.
I can feel the windy yet warm air in my skin and it gives me goosebumps and I feel comfortable in every way. I just feel like I need to get to the other side of the road, but it seems like it will take forever.

Great Black and White Photographers part 3

The thing that really caught my eye with Uelsmann's photography was that he does the unthinkable. There's always something behind his pictures and that's really cool to look in the picture and it's like movie going on. He amazes me because it's like not one of his pictures do I think that it's not impressing enough or that it's too simple because he takes it to another level.

Hurricane Ike

I think that this picture follows the composition rule for framing because the land is surrounded by the waters from hurricane Ike and it's basically "framing" the land. I don't think it's the best frame, but I really liked this picture because of how AMAZING it looks and it almost doesn't look believable.

Hurricane Ike

I chose this picture for the simplicity rule because it doesn't really have much of a crazy background and it's not like a crazy picture where the photographer tried to do this crazy thing to it. I REALLY thought that this image showed how bad the hurricane was and the enormous power it had. It was a truly devastating moment.

9/11 Compositions- Simplicity

Simplicity
I chose this image because simplicity is all about kind of keeping it simple (lol) yet making

9/11 Compositions- Rule Of Thirds

The Rule Of Thirds
I chose this image because the photograph considers the path of the moving smoke and it doesn't seem like there's only some smoke or the HUGE amount of smoke that was actually there. To me, it also seemed like the buildings were placed were the vertically and horizontally lines are connecting in the grid of Thirds.

9/11 Compositions- Lines

Lines
I chose this image because the "S curve" because I just liked how it was made by people, but also doesn't have a busy environment/background.The view point was EXCELLENT and I just really thought it represented Lines very well. (Even though diagnal lines are "Dynamic" I liked the "S curve" better.

9/11 Compositions- Balance

Balance
I chose this image because I thought that it was symmetrically balanced and the colors, shapes, and areas of light and darkness were well balanced and everything. In my opinion it was taken at a good view in which the background isn't too distracting or anything.

9/11 Compositions- Framing

Framing
I chose this image because the black things (which I'm supposing are buildings) on the side are basically surrounding the exploding buildings as if it were a "frame" and that is the point of framing.

9/11 Compositions- Avoiding Mergers

Avoiding Mergers

I chose this image because the image is focused on the principle subject only and not be destracted by the backgroud, which is the main point in Avoinding Mergers.

Negative and Positive pics

Some differences I noticed when comparing both pictures where that:
  • The negative picture is the opposite from the positive picture and vise versa.
  • the colors changed, the negative picture took everything that was dark and took it white. Then, when we turned them into positives, the white part became dark/black and the dark/black parts became white.
  • To me it seemes like in the negative picture, the trees were somewhat smaller than when I looked at them in the positive picture, but maybe I'm just halusinating.
I kind of liked the picture better in negative, just cause you can see it better and like just not see all dark/black.

The Camera

Plates- a sheet of glass (or metal) that is coated with a sensitized emulsion.

Gamut- a complete range or extent

Viewfinder- a camera part that enables the photographer to determine what will be included in the picture

Pentaprism- reverses images laterally and reflects them to the viewfinder

Aperture- it limits the amount of light that is been passed through a lens

Shutter- a mechanical devise that allows the aperture to open or close so that it doesn't expose film

Exposure- when you allow a photosensitive surface to rays of light

Depth of field- a range of distances through the axis of an instrument object in which it will produce a relatively distinct image

F-Spot- the setting of an adjustable lens aperture in which is shown with an F number

Focal Length- length between the focal point of the lens and vice versa

Pinhole Cameras

I didn't like this picture at ALL because I think it was kept too simple, I mean it doesn't really have anything to it.

There isn't anyone in this picture except for the vases. There isn't a blur what so ever to it or a type of warping going on. The vases are in focus, but the background isn't, it's somewhat softer.

Pinhole Cameras

I really liked this picture because to me it seems like somewhere I would like to be at that moment. I love the view and how Rayn Maloney took the picture. It's a true scenic view.

There is no person in the photo and I really don't see it blurry or warpy. The middle, which is like the road and the snow around it was the more focused thing. I think that the trees were out of focus.
